Yumi Nam – Talking Colour

For this task, I tried to explore London as much as I could. As the culture, architecture, and so on in London is different from my hometown, I was inspired by various things such as nature, people, and buildings rather than focusing on one theme. The work started with my new room in London. In my new room, I focused on variety, but similar brownish colours from moving boxes.
I drew them using pastels, however, there are two flaws. It was good to try to demonstrate the variety of colour on the brown spectrum. Although, since the colour palette consisted of similar colours. After I drew boxes, I realized that color diversity should be more visible. In addition, pastels have the feature which is smudging easily. For this reason, I think it would have been better to express the smudging of pastels with fingers or tissues.
On the other hand, I was inspired by the autumn leaves seen through from the fallen tree’s branches at Hyde Park for one of my drawings. It is similar but shows the harmony of other colours properly. Many dots between the branches represent the feeling of autumn like the intensity, the softness, and the calmness through individual colours, in my opinion, it is a great way to express it.
Furthermore, I used materials to create colours and patterns such as coloured pencils, oil pastels, and watercolors that are already familiar with. If I had used various materials such as coloured papers, oil paints, gouaches, and acrylic paints, also other methods such as collage, then I could have improved my understanding of drawing and materials through this assignment.

Hi, Yumi! I absolutely love all the work you produced for this task. You have a wide range of styles, and I can see that you have experimented with many different ways of painting. Some of your drawings are more abstract, such as the one of a man dancing. You use thick and thin lines to convey their dynamics, and the use of colour gives a sense of power. There is another painting inspired by a red telephone booth. I can see that you have deconstructed this source of inspiration: blocks of colour in different sizes and colours, lines in different forms. You have recombined them to create a new image.
Apart from all that, I also see your response to the theme of colour. I really like your use of colour, and I personally think you have a great sense of colour. You have painted the exterior of a restaurant and the exterior of a confectioner’s shop, both of which are relatively figurative, detailed paintings. They both have a large base colour palette, and you have used many small contrasting colours to sculpt the details. The overall picture is very colourful, yet harmonious.
And in the task of talking pattern, you also showed a great sense of coler.
Especially the painting in the café in Shoreditch. The colours are very bold and the whole picture is very playful. Each space cut out by the lines seems random, but also designed. There is also another painting of a sunset, which also has a good composition.
After looking at all your drawings, I think I have learned a lot. I can see that you have made good use of the subject matter, experimenting with a variety of mixed media and recording your inspiration in a variety of ways.
