Talking Color – Lingxi Yang

Throughout the process I learned new combinations of colors. For example, when there are many light colors, you can use a dark color to emphasize the whole artwork, and mark-making is a very pleasant process. You can express it with color according to your understanding of the object and your current mood. In the “color” theme, I used a lot of different materials and methods to paint. The materials are not just ordinary paintbrushes, I also used sponges and paper cups. One of the things I would most like to say is that I painted corals for reflection. At the bottom of the painting I used different colors to express what color the coral is in my impression. Next I drew a circle in the middle to express the shape of the coral seen from a distance. Finally, I found a photo of the coral closest to my impression and carefully drew the lines of the coral with a marker. In the “pattern” theme, I drew something about nature. Among them are my favorite flowers, designers and my cat. There is also an artwork and a photo about graffiti. Of these, the one I want to discuss the most is graffiti. In the process, I discovered that the topic of whether graffiti is art or not has always been controversial. I think it can be a kind of art, because art is inherently pluralistic. There is nothing to define the standards of art, art has no boundaries. And doodles are just different ways that different people want to express themselves. I think it would be interesting to add some elements of graffiti to future projects.

Hello Lingxi, throughout your works, I can see different textures being produced and plenty of media being used here. I like how you have explored the idea of “colour”, for instance, putting really eye-catching and outstanding colour splashes and smudges onto simple black-and-white line drawings, it does create an effective first-sight impression. Also, the dots and repetitive lines that are done in oil pastels are really interesting, I can feel the tension within the drawings. I particularly like the 6th drawing which contains a wide range of materials such as acrylic, oil pastel, and black paper all combined together to contribute a profound focal point throughout your blog, as I keep staring at this. Moreover, I can see from your drawings that there many potentials for these to be transformed into textile pieces, for example, you can try painting on a piece of fabric with acrylic paints and stitching into it that will give a really colourful effect. Maybe you can also use the drawings you have produced and zoom into the sections and do some really playful samples using different materials like organza. I can see that you have used tracing paper for the last two drawings which look quite digital on the blog, perhaps you can try putting them into repeating patterns, also you can try using the heat press machine to translate the patterns onto fabric, which will be an interesting base material to use. To conclude, I like your contributions to this task, I can feel a colourful atmosphere through your work and lots of potential here.
