Peer Feedback; Intro To for Hafsa Patel
By Ana Samaras
Hafsa’s work shows a wide range of mediums used to convey a story within the illustrations produced. Evidently, she has successfully explored perspective, exploration, investigation and surroundings within seeing pattern and talking colour.
When taking a look at Hafsa’s illustrations it was made clear that she thoroughly enjoyed using acrylic paint and collage to execute her ideas. Images three, six and seven from talking colour explore a strong body of depth, exploration and creativity. Particularly image three as she uses newspaper and emulsion print to explore the idea of “transport” through colour and texture. However, it would have been nice to see this image in talking pattern as it conveys ‘pattern’ more than ‘colour’. Nevertheless, this illustration provides us with a clear story that can be developed further within the project.
Moving onwards to talking pattern, Hafsa has produced an exciting, colourful, textural body of work that really explores the theme of “pattern”. The use of primary colours mixed with darker tones of blacks, greys and browns, embody a real earthy, rustic vibe mixed with a pop of colour which stands out quite prominently. It is clear that Hafsa was not afraid to explore these tones and use different techniques to capture the pattern within the design. Images three, four and seven are rich examples of this statement and explore nature in great detail. In saying this, it would have been great to see a few more illustrations in talking pattern as there are a few missing, and perhaps also exploring colour in other ways within pattern. For example, image one can be manipulated digitally by exploring contrast in hues, lighting, exposure, texture, highlights and then repeat pattern it to see what it would look like as an on-going design. To continue, it would also be advantageous if Hafsa explored new techniques other than acrylic to push herself to explore new ideas.
To conclude, Hafsa has confidently produced illustrations that fit the brief and has exceeded in exploration and perspective. For future, it would be great to see Hafsa push herself out of her comfort zone as I feel she already knows how to do most of these techniques and would benefit her to try and explore new ones.
